David Alton Sweet, 77 of Kennebunk, ME passed away February 23rd at Maine Medical Center with his wife Sarah, two daughters, and loved ones by his side. Dave was born in Durham, ME, on July 4th, 1939, the son of Samuel Alton and Dorothy (Yeadon) Sweet. After graduating from Edward Little High School in Auburn, he went on to earn a civil engineering degree at the University of Maine, Orono, and obtained his professional engineering certification. While in college, he was a member and president of Theta Chi fraternity, member of the newly formed Maine Steiners, and participated in ROTC.
His career began in Lewiston, where at 26 he became the youngest Water Superintendent in the State of Maine. His family moved to Kennebunk in 1971 where he began a 31year career at the Kennebunk Kennebunkport Wells Water District, retiring as the district’s Superintendent in 2002. He served for many years in the Maine Water Utilities Association (MWUA) and was President in 1982. Dave was the Maine State Director for the New England Water Works Association from 1987 to 1993 and chair of the MWUA Legislative Committee from 1994 to 1999. As a result of his work ethic and the respect he earned in his field, he received the MWUA Presidential Award in 1982.
Dave led a very active life and had many passions. He became an avid sailor and he and his wife Sarah enjoyed many sailing adventures and vacations, including memorable trips sailing around the US and British Virgin Islands. He loved to fish and hunt with family and longtime friends. He was a proud and active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) for decades, singing baritone in the Downeasters Chorus, the Senior Discount Quartet, and many other quartets through the years.
He loved his two daughters and taught them to be self sufficient and confident which included teaching them how to use tools and auto and home maintenance. He was extremely proud of his sons-in-law and spending time with family was very important to him. Annual summer vacations spent camping in Weld, summers on Sebago Lake and family gatherings of all kinds were always filled with stories, music and laughter. Dave had a great sense of humor and was delighted that his grandchildren shared his "punny" sense.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sarah Boyden Sweet; daughter Terri, and husband Steve Clements of West Gardiner; daughter Wendi and husband (John) Aaron McPike of Kennebunkport; his beloved grandchildren, Nickolas and Marshall Clements, and Joshua and Emily McPike; brother Richard Sweet and wife Nina of North Yarmouth, brother-in-law Wallace Street of Scarborough, many nieces, nephews and cousins, plus a large extended family and circle of friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alton and Dorothy, and his sister Nancy Street, wife of Wallace.
He loved and was loved, and will be greatly missed.
Friends and family are welcome to call on Friday March 3rd from 4-7PM at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St, Kennebunk, ME. A service to honor his life will be held the next day, Saturday March 4th at 11:00AM also at Bibber Memorial. Directly following the service there will be a gathering with food and fellowship at the Sea Road Church’s Function Hall located at 140 Sea Rd Kennebunk, ME.
