Obituary for Timothy John Mathis

Timothy John Mathis
Dateline - North Berwick

Tim Mathis, 52, of North Berwick, Maine, passed away early Saturday, October 24th, 2015, with his loving wife, Karen, by his side, following a 2 1/2 year battle with brain cancer.
Tim is survived by his wife Karen Flynn Mathis, his son Liam,9, his father Garland Wayne, and his sisters Karen and Mary Ann. Tim was the first born son to Kathleen F. (Pookie) and Garland Wayne Mathis. Given his Irish lineage, it's best to use the word "numerous" for his many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was especially close to his aunt, Suzanne Whitehead. His cocker spaniel, Clancy misses Tim dearly.

Tim attended Indiana University and obtained a degree in Public and Environmental Affairs. He had fond memories of his Alpha Sigma Phi brothers and his time with them.
His 17 year career at Gillette garnered numerous accomplishments as Director of Customer Marketing and brought him many life-long friends. His time at Gillette was marked by several relocations to places that always held special memories for Tim.
Most recently serving as Director of Retail Innovation for Industrium Agency of Portland, Maine, Tim never failed to appreciate the friendship and support of his coworkers. He loved working in Maine and having an office that overlooked the beautiful Portland waterfront. His office was overflowing with pictures of his family.
Tim was especially proud to have served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine. Tim's love of nature evolved from his summers spent up in the north woods of Wisconsin at his grandparent's cottage on Black Oak Lake. He had a deep admiration for the outdoors and loved Henry David Thoreau's Walden and The Maine Woods. He created a similar camp of his own for his family on Concord Pond in western Maine.

Tim's favorite movie quote was "Hey dad, want to have a catch?" from Field of Dreams. Tim loved everything that related to Abraham Lincoln. Some of his favorite movies were Field of Dreams, On Golden Pond, The Untouchables, and of course Lincoln.
Tim was an avid reader and enjoyed Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and William Faulkner to name a few. No digital copies for Tim, he would only allow hard covers into the home!
Growing up with music constantly playing in the home throughout his childhood naturally became a big part of Tim's life. His first foray into dance was in his family's living room as a little guy dancing to Petula Clark's Downtown. He loved Robert Johnson, Andy Williams, U2, Louis Armstrong, and Morrissey. Tim also loved Dan Fogelberg and he didn't care who knew it.
His love and respect for history was intangible. Tim adored taking his family to Plymouth Plantation every year but mostly he simply cherished and deeply loved his family.

We will hold Tim in our hearts forever and strive to live life with
the same passion and genuine concern and love he had for others.
A private service and burial will be held on Friday, October 30th at Bibber Memorial Chapel and Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, ME. All are welcome to celebrate Tim's life on Saturday, October 31st, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 pm at The Red Barn at Outlook Farm, South Berwick, ME.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tim's name to Big Brothers Big Sisters, 195 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME, 04101.
